放生 . Fantasies

Soulful Scribbles:

放生, transliterated as 'unleashing life', is a strongly advocated practice in Buddhism. It aims to release creatures caught by human beings for own gain, such as for food or for their skin or fur, as a testament to Lord Buddha's great teachings on infinite compassion and selflessness.

☼ ☼ ☼

On Saturday morning, I woke up at 7 something (a very torturing time for me to wake up indeed, as I normally sleep till way past noon) in order to join my family to a 放生 ceremony held at the old Thai Buddhist wat in my town (the newer and larger Wat Nikrodharam is just a stone's throw away).

Before the creatures were officially released, we attended a prayer session where Buddhist mantras were chanted. Those animals (fish, pigeons and miniscule frogs) were supposedly bought by the ceremony organizers from restaurants, pet shops or wet markets, where they were just minutes away from a merciless genocide. Poor creatures! :(

The fish were released into the river that traversed through the backyard of the wat. As for the cute little frogs, they were set free into the wat's grass field. The big fat pigeons were to be released into the vast blue sky, but the one on my hand stayed still for quite a few seconds before it spread its wings and flew away. Perhaps it wasn't used to its sudden new found freedom. Hmm...

Come... Let me be your tour guide today as I'm gonna take you guys to peep a peep at my grandma's plot of heaven.

Honeydew melon plant? This is what she told me...

Da spice of life! Essential for Malaysian dishes. I'm lovin' it...

End of tour. I know this tour is way too short, duh! Maybe next time... ;)

☼ ☼ ☼

The month of March had seen a great influx of tags. The one I'm gonna do right now is probably the most enjoyable one. Why? Because it drives me high on fantasies! Oh by the way, it's an imperial summon from the emperor, dated March 13th. Ampun tuanku... Beribu-ribu ampun!

#1: Passport to the world's 4 corners

This is my ultimate fantasy! I've been stuck here for the past decade and I seriously need to go somewhere else for a deep breath. And no... I didn't travel there. In fact, I haven't been to any of those places. The postcards and stuff are just souvenirs from my grandma and aunt, but not the travel guides (1 is gifted by a friend while I purchased the remaining 3).

From the grandiose monuments in Paris to the splendid madrasahs in Samarkand. From the sun-drenched beaches in Rio de Janeiro to the sacred temples in Jerusalem. From the wilderness in Sahara to the coral reef in Bora Bora. All these destinations are definitely worth a visit at least once in a lifetime.

#2: L. I. F. E.
A happy family. A distinguished career. A prosperous health. An endless wealth. In short, I wish for a fulfilling life with no regrets! You tell me... Who does not wish for that? I'm so gonna rub my lamp for it...

WHERE DA HELL ARE YOU, GENIE???

#3: His Cyber Highness da Gadget King
I'm so crazy about tech stuff that I wish I could own all my desired mobile phones, lappies, rigs and peripherals. Gimme the latest and the best anytime! Apple, Sony, Samsung, Nokia... I hampalang sapu!

#4: Own private island
What's the best thing to do when you have zillions? Buy properties, no doubt! An island all to myself sounds so heavenly indeed. I could have my own stretch of white sandy beach as well as my own beachfront villa.

So where on Earth could I fulfill my sweetest yet wildest fantasy? Perhaps here.

#5: Utopia
I pray for world peace. I pray for no wars. I pray for no natural calamities. I pray for no poverty. I pray for zero illiteracy. I pray for religious tolerance. I pray for racial harmony. I pray for human unity.

Oh, forget about it! This is the most unlikely to happen of all my fantasies. Humans are plain selfish. They would never ever let you possess what they aspire to own. Humans are inherently insane. They gain gratification from wars and bloodshed. History is gonna repeat itself. A modern Crusader war has just started to show its early signs. Soon, the whole world would be doomed. 6.5 billion (and counting) of us would all cease to exist. The Apocalypse? I'm afraid it is...

Waa you really released those saved creatures into the wild, to fend for themselves, against all of nature's might, and predators, and onrushing airplanes, and trains, and submarines?!! Oh well, better than to be eaten by humans, I suppose..

Waaaa, I'd forgotten about this tag.. In fact, I had forgotten what it was all about too, until reading midway, when it occurred to me it could be 5 Wishes!!! *grin* Well done!! Yeah, World Peace! World Regeneration!! World Repossessed! YATTAAA!!!

Yep... Definitely tonnes better than being eaten by us!

Wanna make more wishes? ;)

No wars! No wars! Peace for the world!

Selba: 1 panting chup for ya!

Depends. You gotta know there are practising and non-practising ones. Nonetheless, all Buddhists are strongly encouraged to do so. ;)

angie: Serious meh???

day-dreamer: 你不爽什么? 我就是酱好心的嘛! 你现在才知道, 未免太迟了吧? :P

We never know what's gonna happen tomorrow, so should live our lives to the fullest and enjoy the best of it while we still can.

On a lighter note, go to Paris!! I'm so dying to go back there for the 2nd time!

Agree! :)

Yep... Definitely must visit there! It's my all-time #1 dream destination!

I wonder how it'd be like if my family had practiced that sort of ritual, letting go the living creatures and all. at least you saved them from being killed! yay!

*prays for utopia too*

kyh said...

You and your family can practise this ritual anytime, anywhere, no matter you're a Buddhist or not. It's all for the sake of the natural world. :)

:pray pray too:

have to say something about releasing animals into the wild... dont u think it promotes ppl to catch them again?

kyh said...

We can't stop that if those people insist on catching them again. At least we've tried our best to save them from being slaughtered, thus we've saved their lives, or we've managed to prolong their lives. Being killed today is miles different from being killed 10 days later, ya know? It's one of the greatest deeds to save animals from being killed or harmed. Those who capture the creatures back will be prone to severe punishment in their afterlives, no matter in what religion.

zewt said...

well... my zewtpinion is that... they catch it so that ppl will pay to get them released. if the releasing stops... so does the catching too...

kyh said...

Do you really think they would stop? These cold-blooded humans would then send the poor animals to those exotic restaurants instead, all for the sake of $$$! If it's that easy to stop, the world would then become a wonderland.

zewt said...

well... i am refering more on those who catch animals solely for releasing purposes. oh well, there's always 2 side to a coin...

Just live each day and try and do your best. Encourage others to do well. Thats all we can do.

Apocalypse means revelation. Gets mistaken as the end of time. But no end of time coming. Maybe a lot of people will die, but some will always live.

Won't surprise me if my country got destroyed as we care more about the remote control than border control. But some nations will survive. Always do. I currently see southeast Asia and on towards Australia as being places that can be a calm in the coming storm.

kyh said...

zewt: If it's like that, then it would be their business. They'll pay for it sooner for sure. And I doubt they can truly survive by depending on this solely in today's world, considering not many people are involved actively in this 放生 ritual. I'm sure they wouldn't let go the lucrative business of providing meat to the exotic restaurants as well as other similar routes.

Simple American: Agree. :)

Apocalypse does mean revelation. But the term also means the end of the world in modern days. You can wiki that term for an in-depth explanation on the definition. ;)

Southeast Asia is calm? Maybe yes. But Islamic fundamentalism is on the rise in this region, particularly in Indonesia, Southern Philippines and Southern Thailand. Lots of terrorist and separatist attacks have occurred in recent years. Not that calm and peaceful actually.

utopia.. hmm, sometimes I wonder what this world will be like if it's one.. nice one btw.

It's a great vision, yet I'm sure it won't happen in our lifetimes. Never ever.
